A Healthy Twofold Resolution; "Think Globally, Act Locally"

Healthy Environment

This year, I am going to plant a tree.

I am inspired by two global Nobel Peace Laureate Prize winners, 2004 Professor Wangari - Maathai of Africa, and 2007 former Vice President Al Gore of the United States of America. Both recipients are working to make the world a better place to live.

One criteria for winning the the Nobel Peace Prize is: the candidate must make a difference in the world. The Nobel committee stated that Professor Wangari - Maathai "thinks globally, and acts locally."

Professor Wangari - Maathai, a Kenyan environmentalist, was the first female African to be awarded the Nobel Peace prize. Moreover, Maathai is the founder of the Green Belt Movement in Africa. The purpose of the organization is to plant trees, which provide fuel, food, shelter, and income to thousands of people, with the majority being women.

Wangari said" when we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and the seeds of hope." Over 30 million trees have been planted thus far. For more information on Professor Wangari - Maathai, and the Green Belt Movement check http://www.greenbeltmovement.org/.

Another organization, UNEP (The United Nations Environment Programme ) allows people from all over the world to pledge to plant a tree. Furthermore, UNEP is a great global resource for keen information, and scientific happenings all over the world. Check http://www.unep.org/.

Former Vice President Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his work, which produced the documentary film, "An Inconvenient Truth." The film draws attention to the severe problem of the increasing global warming on Earth. Additionally, Gore's work keeps the Global Warming issue on a political agenda as well.

In Summary, we must do more to make a difference in the world, and stop global warming. Some ideas and ways on my list are:

1. Plant a tree.
2. Utilize Rain Water for Watering plants etc.
3. Continue to Recycle.
4. Buy a Hybrid Vehicle (Soon).
5. Add Solar Panels to My New Home (soon).
6. Continue to Conserve Energy.
7. Utilize Cloth Grocery Bags.

Please comment on how you will work to stop global warming, or share with us, what you are doing now to make a difference?

Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy New Year 2008.

Good. Just think of the millions of batteries that are needed to operate all of the technological gadgets around the world.

Buy a Hybrid Vehicle (Soon).

Hello, K. Ray

I would hope that soon major governments, auto manufacturers and oil/energy companies would come together making hybrid vehicles standard. People will buy hybrids when they are available and affordable at auto dealerships. We need vehicles, but cleaner alternatives should be sought after as we can limit, more so, human contributions to environmental change. It would be nice to be able to see many more stars at night in metropolitan areas because the air is cleaner.

Happy New Year

Russ:)

Happy New Year Russ.

You made an excellent point.

With both the auto show in Michigan, Jan.2008, and our upcoming presidential election, I am hopeful for inroads in the area for a cleaner enviroment.

Thank you for your comment.

We need more people like you, that care. I think it is time for the people of Earth to make some even more serious changes.

1. Plant a tree.
We need to stop killing them, and use composites. etc...
2. Utilize Rain Water for Watering plants etc.
Only 3% of Earth's water is fresh. Over population is the biggest problem. 10 billion people by 2050 will not work - controlled world growth.
3. Continue to Recycle.
Yes, make it international law.
4. Buy a Hybrid Vehicle (Soon).
The U.S. must save the world, again, by putting the resources into developing cold fusion like we did developing the A-bomb. Note:China produces more green house gas and pollutes more than we do... and growing.
5. Add Solar Panels to My New Home (soon).
Ditto step 4.
6. Continue to Conserve Energy.
Ditto step 4.
7. Utilize Cloth Grocery Bags.
Ditto step 3.

Difficult - Yes. Impossible - No.
We the people of the greatest nation on Earth have the greatest responsibility.

Thank you for your passionate response thebrenster.

The United Nations has a program for all people around the world to participate, which will bring awareness to "Save the Earth, We May Need it One Day."

I will continue to plant wild flowers, roses and evergreens in my yard around my home. Every morning during the spring, summer, fall and winter the flowers and evergreens protect the environment, especially, since I reside near a major freeway in Michigan.

I will not cut the grass during the dog days of summer.

I will keep my vehicle's oil changed every 3000 miles.

I will not pollute the land, lakes or oceans.

I will help save the endangered species and rain forrests.
